Article by Al Terry

Brief Encounter Broadway tickets are on sale currently at the Studio 54 Theater box office. The play is based on the classic original film of the same name. The film was created by Noel Coward and now considered one of the greatest British films of all time. Coward adapted the screen play from his earlier one-act play “Still Life” which he wrote in the 1930′s. The London’s Kneehigh Theatre has brought its production around the UK before finding it a steady home in London’s West End. The play received great reviews and was highly accepted from critics and audiences alike. Now the wonderful love story awaits it’s opening on Broadway and anticipation is running hot.

The Story

When you buy Brief Encounter Broadway tickets you are going to see a wonderful new style of Broadway play. The story is one of love and passion between two married people, Laura and Alec. Laura is a stay at home housewife who has found herself in the doldrums of her daily life. Alec is a handsome thirty-something doctor with a family of his own. Laura spends time during the week downtown for a little break of her daily household routing. She spends her time shopping and taking in a matinee at the local cinema. One day while waiting for the train to take her home, she becomes bothered by something flown into her eye. Alec comes to assist and the two strike up a conversation, instantly having feelings for each other’s company.

The story mainly takes place from the train station where the two met. They make plans for continuous meeting and are soon swept away in love. They couple begins to fear friends and acquaintances running into them on their meetings and one day both come to realize that they cannot pursue their relationship any further for fear of being caught and hurting their families. Laura and Alec decide to call it quits and head their separate way, but not before one last meeting together.

The Show

The play has been adapted from the silver screen to the stage by director Emma Rice. This will be her Broadway debut breakout, and she has done a wonderful job mixing the stage play with the film. Her work on “Brief Encounter earned her a 2009 Oliver Award nomination for Best Director. The stage show uses story, song, dance and projections to display a wonderful and inventive imaginative work. The audiences are entertained as the cast wanders through the house, turn themselves into stage props and sings out in the aisles of the theater. The projections blend the characters into film footage, and dazzling Technicolor brings the touching and amusing story to life.

Brief Encounter Broadway tickets are on sale at the box office and running between .00 and 5.00. The show has been getting much attention of all the Broadway fall openings, mainly because of the huge success of the movie which it is based on. The play had an “Off Broadway” run in Brooklyn at St. Ann’s Warehouse and enjoyed great success with a sold out run. Make sure to book your seats early because this limited-engagement is sure to sell out many shows.

The five classic films every biker should watch

Article by Rhia Chohan

Fans of motorcycles like to live the lifestyle to accompany their fascination for bikes. The wheels, the leathers and the music are all part of motorcycle mania and being an adrenaline junkie. Most important however, are the films, which define motorcycle culture today. So hold on tight while we chopper through the five must-see motorcycle pictures to rev through our cinemas during past decades.

The Wild One (1953)

Marlon Brando in his iconic pin-up days stars as the hard-nosed and gritty Johnny Strabler. Based on an actual event that took place in Hollister, California it is considered by many to be the king of outlaw biker cinema.

Brando leads the Black Rebels motorcycle gang who ride British Triumphs while the rival American Harley Davidson riding Beatles are led by Chino, played by Lee Marvin. The locals of small town Wrightsville, California are caught in the middle of a biker war. Both Brando and Marvin are dressed for the part in biker leathers for their wild roles.

Easy Rider (1969)

The film’s tagline was: “A man went looking for America. And couldn’t find it anywhere…” Easy Rider was directed by Dennis Hopper, who also starred as Billy alongside Peter Fonda’s character Wyatt, nicknamed Captain America. Both of them are free spirits who ride down to Mardi Gras in New Orleans after making a drug deal in Los Angeles.

Along the way they pick up Jack Nicholson, playing an alcohol lawyer called George Hanson who meets an unfortunate end at the hands of a tribe of rednecks. This film explores the societal landscape of 1960s America and is a cocktail of drugs, prostitution, hippies and a rock soundtrack, which features the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Steppenwolf.

A motorcycle lover’s favourite, Easy Rider features four former police bikes, including the 1949, 1952 and 1952 Harley Davidson with hardtail frames and Panhead engines.

Quadrophenia (1979)

The British film Quadrophenia is loosely based on the 1973 rock opera by The Who. Phil Daniels stars as Jimmy, a Mod, along with Leslie Ash, Ray Winstone, Phil Davis, Mark Wingett and Sting. The film’s plot includes an ensuing battle between Mods and Rockers in Brighton and a dramatic ending on the cliffs at Beachy Head. The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

This is not a cult biker film but it is based on a book about a political icon and is a definite must-see if you’re after a bit of culture as well as bikes. The Motorcycle Diaries is a biopic about the written memoir of a 23-year-old medical student Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara who took a journey in 1952 with his biochemist friend Alberto Granado, across South America.

His experiences and observations of indigenous poverty influenced him to become what popular culture best knows as the Marxist icon Che Guevara. Ernesto (Gael GarcĂa Bernal) and Alberto’s (Rodrigo de la Serna) main form of transport is an ancient and leaky – but functional – Norton 500 motorcycle named La Poderosa, meaning ‘The Mighty One’.

Hells Angels on Wheels (1967)

This cult classic stars Jack Nicholson who plays Poet, a bored gas-station attendant, who finds life more exciting after he begins to associate with a chapter of the Hells Angels outlaw motorcycle club led by Buddy (Adam Rourke). There is a lot of wild partying mayhem in this film as well as tense relationships and the Hells Angels’ continuing encounters with the ‘squares’ of society.

This public domain movie is a classic example of film noir and one of my favorite movies. In it, a guy is poisoned by radiation poisoning put in his drink, and he knows he is going to die, but in with his remaining time he dedicates himself to discovering who killed him, and why. It wasn’t on YouTube yet so I thought I’d put it up. Orchard-L, author of Boundless Ocean, Missing, and who is helping me make Saturated Dreamers, recommended the movie to me. Science-Fiction & Fantasy Cinema-Classic Films of Horror, Sci-Fi & the Supernatural John Howard Reid.

Article by wr potter

I have long desired to see the 1927 sci-fi classic, Metropolis. I lost interest when I discovered a confusing assortment of versions, restorations, and run times existed. I was delighted to see a movie poster of the film gracing the cover of author John Howard Reid’s

This is the twenty-third entry in Reid’s “Hollywood Classics” series. To say that Mr. Reid is a movie buff is like calling the Pope religious. His movie addiction began at age 5 when he first saw Laurel and Hardy in “Jitterbugs” at a Saturday matinee. He began writing movie reviews at age twelve and wrote reviews for rival newspapers as an adult. He drew on his more than 20,000 reviews and his personal collection of over 3,000 titles on DVD and VHS to write this book.

Nearly 300 titles are examined. Some like Creature from the Black Lagoon or Flash Gordon are well known, while others are more obscure: The Hound of the Baskervilles or a Spanish version of Dracula from 1931. Reid doesn’t leave out animated favourites like Peter Pan and Cinderella. The best of Elmer Fudd, Bugs Bunny, Roadrunner, Donald Duck, and many others that graced the big screen in the 1940′s and 50′s was a nostalgic highlight for me. The book looks at several of these seven minute animated films that made up my Saturday morning television routine as a child in the 70′s.

For each selection Mr. Reid includes the full cast and the parts played by name. The director, screenplay writer, editor, music composers, and producers are listed, as well as copyright date, studio, worldwide release dates and running times. Many selections include the dates when the movie was made and locations where the film was shot and the cost to produce them. Each title is summarized, many with Mr. Reid’s own personal review and other reviewers’ comments.

Movies like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Karloff’s The Mummy, Star Wars, and Cinderella in the same book with Fire Maidens from Outer Space, Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur, and Bride of the Gorilla makes this a fascinating collection.

All this, and the expert advice on the best version of Metropolis, make Science-Fiction & Fantasy Cinema-Classic Films of Horror, Sci-Fi & the Supernatural by John Howard Reid a must read for movie buffs and film trivia fans and for those who take pleasure in a wonderful cinema experience. Twenty-first century cinema appears to be more about special effects and marketing than producing satisfying films. If you are interested in finding the gems that came before, then this book is a key to which you will refer again and again. Highly Recommended.

Science Fiction & Fantasy CinemaA Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney, John Howard Reid founded his own book wholesale distribution service shortly after graduation. He then moved into publishing and finally into book retailing. As a Publisher, he served as his own Chief Editor and also contributed articles and stories to magazines and newspapers. In his spare time, he acted as a film critic, reviewing both new movies and TV offerings for two rival weekly newspapers (for one of which, of course, he used a pseudonym). After selling his book shops, Reid concentrated on his own writing career, although he now also spends a lot of time working as Chief Judge for three of America’s largest literary competitions: The Tom Howard Poetry Contest for All Styles and Genres; The Margaret Reid Prize for Traditional Verse; and The Tom Howard Short Story, Essay and Prose Contest. Reid is the author of the bestselling “Write Ways To Win Writing Contests.” As a fiction writer, Reid first achieved fame in England and Australia for a series of detective novels, all featuring a Miami police sergeant named Merryll Manning, who made his debut in “Merryll Manning: Trapped on Mystery Island”. The Florida Keys provided an atmospheric setting.
